Review Better World by Autumn Kalquist

Better World (Legacy Code Prequel)Better World by Autumn Kalquist
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

"What if quitting was the only escape?"

Ok, so i'm not sure what my feelings are regarding this book.. I'm a little confuse; i think more than a little. And maybe, because there are so many books and short storys connected to this series, that i don't know how to associate them with the original story, i mean the first book. There are so many characters, and the story line is similar but different at the same time.

So this book, aparently, it's two years before the Paragon story, the first book in this series. For me, honestly, it wasen't necessary. I didn't need it, i didn't have questions that were needed to be answered. So, i don't see the point of this short story. The only short series that i need, and i think that ansewer to all the questions i have, and others that have read this series, is DEFECT.
It was a little hard for me to connect with it because i kinda forgot the details about first novel, and the name of the characters. But, i finally caught up.
It wasn't a bad story, but it was not my favorite. I don't know... For me - to many details, tehnical details. And being so short i thought that it will be more about the characters and not so much about the world. And i still didn't get the ending. Like i sad, so confusing.

The only part that i liked was that not typical love story that i read about it so far. *And i know i have to read more of those storys. Hope, very soon* That is the only reason why i'm giving this book 2 stars.
My opinion?! It will be better if the author would stay focused on the original story, and not on the short novels. I mean, there are so many of those... i don't need them, i need the real story, the volume 3 of the Legacy Code.

"Come back to me, and ask me again...I'll say yes."

Author: Anne Jolin
Series: Willow Bay Stables #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance & Sports Equestrian Romance
London Daniels is returning home to Willow Bay, Alberta, on the heels of a televised loss. She blew her shot at the Summer Olympics and cost Canada the gold medal in dressage.

During her years of training abroad, her family's stable has fallen on hard times, and thus, they’ve accepted an offer to board the racehorses of Branson Tucker, the infamous tycoon, for the winter.

London lacks conviction after her ill-fated fall. And as if returning to her hometown to watch her epic failure replay on everyone's big screen isn't torture enough, she’s expected to cater to a man with an ego bigger than her hundred-acre farm just to earn a dime.

Is London saddling up for another ride that will leave both her heart and her ass in the dirt? Or could the handsome, unwanted guest at Willow Bay Stables be her second chance to go for gold?

After helping her up onto the tailgate, I grab the wine and two glasses. When I join her in the bed of the truck, I pour us each a cup and then lift my glass up to hers for a toast.

“Here’s to first dates.”

After clinking her cup with mine, she takes a delicate sip, and the rumble in my chest comes unexpectedly as she swallows the wine.

As if on cue, the radio changes, and the first twangs of Jackson Young’s “If It Ain’t Too Much To Ask” drift out across the lake.

After we set our cups down on the edge of the truck bed, her arms wrap around my neck. My palm splays over her lower back as I tuck the sweetness of her body against mine.

“You makin’ it a habit of wooing me with your dancin’ skills, cowboy?” She laughs, and the way it mixes with the song has to be the most heavenly thing I’ve ever heard.

My cheek brushes hers as we dance closer. “That depends.”

“On?” Her breath whispers against my ear.

“If it’s working or not.”

She laughs again, and with God as my witness, I’m a lucky bastard to be holding her right now. “It might be,” she teases.

Her body was made for mine. Pressed together, we’re even more perfect. Strawberry wine dousing our inhibitions in wild desire.

The chorus to the song is coming up, and knowing I don’t suck at least half as much as she does, I sing softly into her ear, albeit still out of tune. She joins me, singing adorably off tune into my ear. “I know it ain’t an easy life, people can tell you that”—She hums along, folding her body closer around mine—“but to ask for a little bit, just a little bit back, If it ain’t too much to ask..”

“If it ain’t too much to ask,” her voice sings adorably off tune into my ear.

I chuckle, and she reaches down to elbow me in the side before her eyes find mine once again.

“If it ain’t too much to ask, cowboy…I could really go for that kiss right about now.” She tries to sing along with the song, but by adding her own words, she fails miserably.

But it’s the thought that counts.

Do I hate that she felt she had to ask for it? Bet your ass I do. Will it stop me from giving her what she wants? Not a chance in hell.

Tipping my invisible cowboy hat towards her with one hand, I put the other in the hair at the base of her neck. “Nothing you ask will ever be too much, London.” With that, I give in to the greatest temptation I’ve ever had and every desire I’ve ever dreamed of.

It’s only with unique restraint that I’m able to keep my lips from fully crashing down onto hers. Instead, I take her softly, certain I’ve died and gone to heaven at the first taste of her. When she whimpers, the greed in me takes the opportunity to slip my tongue into her mouth, claiming all she’ll give me. Her hands pull at the base of my neck, desperate to have me closer as the heat in our kiss grows deeper as the song comes to a close.

After breaking apart, I rest my forehead on hers, running my thumb across her bottom lip. Then I sing the very last line, holding her close.

I kissed the prettiest girl I’ve every laid eyes on while dancing on the tailgate of my truck in the middle of nowhere, and it was the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

“Nicely done.” Zack Hunter was right beside her, tall as hell and commanding in his presence. “Sam sent me over to rescue you. But once again, looks like you can get out of an uncomfortable situation without much help.” He grinned down at her.

Zack’s confidence reminded Rebecca a lot of Antonio’s strength and power. Her heart fluttered at the thought of Antonio. But Zack was a more flirty kind of guy, winking and grinning, very unlike Antonio, who was always so intense and serious.

“We’re over here.” Zack gestured toward the door to another room.

“Did you have a chance to check on the case for me?” Her cheeks heated. She knew she shouldn’t be putting Sam’s fiancé on the spot. He was an agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and could get in trouble for talking to a reporter about information in an active case.

Instead of looking pissed, Zack just smiled. “Yes.”

Yes, and? “I know I shouldn’t ask you, but…”

“You’re going to anyway.” Zack winked at her. “Sam warned me you would. Here’s what I can tell you. Off the record, of course.”

“Of course.”

“The FBI’s kidnapping case is still open.” Zack casually led her through the crowd, nodding as they passed people, looking cool and in control. No wonder Sam lived for this guy. “Since we can only assume the other kidnapper, the one caught on tape throwing you in the van here in Tampa, is dead in the waters of Cuba, and Antonio Vega is still in Cuba, the FBI’s case will remain open for a while, but I wouldn’t worry about it.” Zack’s eyes crinkled at the corners. “You were clearly the victim in all of this.”

Was I? She exhaled. “Well, right, I’m not in trouble. I just don’t want Antonio to be either.”

Zack stopped dead in the middle of the room. “Really?”

Now her checks were flaming. One thing she’d left out of her documentary was her growing attraction to and relationship with Antonio. “Well, he has a family here now to support and…” In fact, she hadn’t shared all the details with Sam, either.

Zack threw up a hand. “Then your friend should stay in Cuba where our federal law officers have no jurisdiction.” Shaking his head, Zack motioned for her to move through the door first. “The man still masterminded a kidnapping that resulted in a murder.”

“He didn’t kidnap me, Zack.” Rebecca wished she had proof of what happened to both Ignado and Antonio, but even Esmeralda hadn’t been able to get info from inside Cuba. Rebecca furrowed her brow, a slight headache coming on.

“You okay?” Sam walked up, handing Rebecca a much-needed glass of white wine. “You look stunning in your Alexander McQueen.”

“Oh, right.” Rebecca glanced down at her black rented gown. “Thanks.” She’d forgotten how excited she’d been to wear it here tonight. That was before her trip to Cuba and before Antonio. “I’m fine. Thanks for the wine.” She raised the glass in salute to Sam, Dallas, and Zack, her friends all gathering around her in support. “Salud. To a great night.” She must concentrate on what was good right now.
Friends, fame, and food. Unlike in Cuba, there would always be plenty of food here.

Dallas rolled his eyes. “You get any happier, and that face is gonna fall off.”

She sighed. Dallas nailed her with the truth. Once again. “I’m just feeling a little guilty.” Why not tell Sam the truth, too? “Antonio is probably being roughed up in some Cuban jail cell, skinny and sick.”

She turned to look at the man who would definitely understand. “And Dallas, we’re here, drinking and being celebrated for exposing his poor family on national TV.” There. She’d said it. “And if Antonio ever comes back to America, I’m the reason he’ll probably be arrested.”

Zack Hunter cleared his throat. “You did nothing to seal that man’s fate. He’s a grown man who made his own decisions. You are a victim.”

Maybe in the beginning, but I became a willing participant. And now I miss Antonio. Damn it. She missed every damn thing about him. She especially missed the way Antonio made her question her every decision. He’d forced her to think. He’d been the force behind her growth. And she was a better person now for it. She felt enlightened.

Author:  M. Peters
Published:  June 23rd, 2012
Genre:  Dark Romance, Erotica
Content Warning:  Violence, explicit sexual material, M/M, M/F
Recommended Age: 18+

Synopsis:  When a seductive French vampire crosses swords with a fierce Spaniard who is angry at the world, the worldly preternatural gets more than he was expecting. The heartbeat which had attracted Keith D’Ameron to the city in the first place belongs to his opponent – and the secretive vampire finds that even three hundred long years on this earth have not prepared him for the depth of the desire Javier Estas arouses in him. Keith begins a sensuous and compelling courtship, intending to claim Javier Estas in every way for eternity. Will Javier turn away from all that he knows and follow the siren call of Keith’s seductive midnight eyes, or will he forever bury his undisclosed desire for this mysterious man who has turned his life upside down?

Excerpt from Undisclosed Desire by M. Peters:

Keith D’Ameron has wandered the world as a vampire for three hundred years, traveling through Europe and the East in search of something for which he has no name. Up until now, he has simply enjoyed what his world of the night can bring to him, but now he has come to Spain. Upon entering Seville, a heartbeat rises above the rest of the thrumming pulses occupying the busy city, and something in its siren call urges Keith to investigate.
The owner of this heartbeat, the vampire finds, is a beautiful young man named Javier Estas, and upon first sight – whether it is only for a night or for something more – Keith knows he must make the young man his own. Something in the scent of his blood, and the very thrum of the life in Javier’s verdant gaze, has drawn Keith to this man, and he is determined to find out why.

Within the hour, Keith finds himself at sword-point in a tree-lined square, where he must make a decision between keeping his secrets intact or allowing himself to open up to another human being for the first time in three centuries. Something within Javier’s eyes calls to him as nothing else has ever done, and he finds he must pursue this new avenue which has revealed itself to him in that dusty square where he faces Javier for the first time.
At first, Javier is hesitant, but Keith is not the only one lured on by something he cannot comprehend, and he finds himself captivated by the glimpses of Keith’s world he sees every time he falls into the vampire’s eyes. At last, he finds that he cannot continue to deny his undisclosed desire for Keith – and that he doesn’t want to keep trying.

Author: Tracey Kramer-Kelly
Series: Army Ranger #1
U.S. Army Ranger Cory Foster returns from his latest mission to find the ‘civilized’ world turned upside down. Trading in defending his country for protecting his sister, he’s just biding time until he can leave on his next mission.

Dr. Madison Wright doesn’t date military men - or family members of her patients. But when a medical emergency introduces her to a tough-but-sensitive Army Ranger, she’s tempted to bend the rules despite the little voice inside her head.

When a beaten and bloody Cory shows up on Maddy’s doorstep, she can’t turn him away. But their relationship is soon tested as Cory struggles with doubts about his future in the Rangers, and Maddy wonders if opening herself to loving a military man is a wise choice.

This is Book One in the Army Rangers Series. It is a novella of under 15K words. There is one sexually explicit/erotic scene in this novella.

“Beautiful,” he murmured as his eyes met hers.

Her eyes were drawn to his hands. She watched as he loosened the string on his gym pants and let them fall to the floor. She wondered briefly if his wound still hurt him, but this was like watching her own private strip tease show—starring her own private Adonis—and she forgot everything except how turned on she was.

She brought her eyes back to find his still locked on hers. “Underwear,” she managed through a suddenly dry mouth. “Take it off.”

Something sparked in his eyes, something fierce and primal, and it thrilled her. He dropped his underwear, and as she stared at his erection, he cupped it with his own hand briefly, as if to say:

This is for you.

Author: Tracey Kramer-Kelly
Series: Army Ranger #2
U.S. Army Ranger Chase Richards just wants to do the honorable thing. That’s pretty easy when he’s chasing bad guys, but harder when it comes to his best friend’s little sister.

Ella Foster is off limits - and has been for three years. But when Chase agrees to help her in an emergency, he gets more than he bargained for - with Ella and her drug-dealing ex-boyfriend. Now he’s got to keep his hands off her - and his heart intact - or risk losing the respect of his best friend.

Ella has been infatuated with Chase since the day her brother first introduced them. The handsome hero was her knight in shining armor when she needed rescuing, but he’s so far out of her league, she’s sure she can never have him.

But when Ella’s ex crosses the line, Chase’s honor will be tested like never before…

I write about bikers, soldiers and celebrities. I manage our family motorcycle accessories business (Leader Motorcycle) full-time and support my two kids in their competitive soccer teams, so I steal time to write whenever I can. I’m not fast, but I’m persistent!
You’ve caught me at an exciting time.
The first two books in my Army Ranger Series are out (about two Army Ranger buddies who survive everything together… except, perhaps… falling in love) AND my full-length novel about a wounded veteran/amputee, True Surrender, was just re-released in audio format!

In keeping with the military theme, here are Five Secrets readers don’t know about me (and my writing).

1) I was a good medic but a terrible soldier. I spent five years as an Army Combat Medic. I loved the medical aspects of my Army training but I wasn’t good at taking orders or keeping track of the many ‘traditions’ of military life (you can read more at

2) I don’t do well with vomit. I often write my characters experiencing medical emergencies. As an Army Combat Medic, I could handle blood, guts and gore. But when it was vomit (in the back of an ambulance, for example) I came perilously close to joining my patient in upchucking my dinner! (That was the end of my brilliant idea to pay my way through college working night shifts for an ambulance service.)

3) I get along better with men than women. I wasn’t a huge tomboy as a kid; but I had stuffed animals instead of Barbie dolls, and I preferred the Fisher-Price ‘people’ to dress-up sessions. In my late teens and early twenties, I spent a lot of time with men between riding a motorcycle (not many women doing that at the time) and joining the National Guard. (It worked out well, as I regularly write from the male’s POV!)

4) I became a ‘biker chick’ at age 15. I joke that I was riding a motorcycle before I was driving a car (thanks to my dad). I was a pretty ordinary, slightly nerdy teenager in every other way, but I think there was a rebel streak in me even then; I liked being one of the few women riders (that has, thankfully, changed!). My current ride is a Yamaha Raider.

5) I wasn’t especially patriotic in my younger years. Even though I was in the military myself (and dang near got sent to Desert Storm in the early ‘90s), I didn’t really ‘get it.’ As I got older, however, I was influenced by several things. One: my motorcycle buddies are very patriotic. Two: our family business manufactures US-made products and it’s not so easy! But it was writing True Surrender - having to get inside the mind of a soldier - that really made me proud to be an American.

Tracey Kramer-Kelly

Wounded veterans. Biker chicks. Famous people with secrets to hide.

These are the characters that tend to populate Tracey's writing. It's about their personal journey, and their transformation.

Tracey's writing draws from her experience as an Army Reserve paramedic as well as over 20 years of being a "biker chick" herself.

In addition to fiction, she also tries to keep one toe in the music world, contributing vocals to several albums as well as releasing her own covers. She has even been known to produce a video or two!

When she's not writing or running the family motorcycle accessories business, she enjoys hanging out with her husband and two young kids, especially in the great outdoors.
