About the Author
L. Chapman was born in and continues to live in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. She has spent most of her life helping others as a health care assistant, and was, at one time, a DJ for a special needs club. Blending her love of helping others and her love of children, L dreams to one day own and operate a childcare nursery that will help mainstream special needs children with others.
In the rare times that L. is not working to help others or maniacally writing, she enjoys making a mess of things while creating beautifully detailed greeting cards. She spends time relaxing with family, friends, and good books. L. loves to travel and has been to many places in the United Kingdom; her favorite places all involve the ocean. She hopes to one day share a kiss with her happily-ever-after in the romantic shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Should she ever get over her fear of flying, those kisses may be shared in the shadows of the Egyptian Pyramids.
Ever the fussy eater, L. has never once tasted peanut butter, and she despises coffee. If you should feel the need to bribe her, it is suggested that you bring chocolate, as that is one of her know weaknesses.

Identity Crisis by Jean Hackensmith

Title: Identity Crisis
Genre: Detective
Author: Jean Hackensmith
Publisher: Inkwater Press
Language: English
Pages: 260
When rumors of how Dan Hamilton actually died reach the Cheyenne Chief of Police, Brian Koski is forced to resign his position as captain of the Sixth Precinct and go into business for himself as a private detective. His partner? A mahogany colored Belgian Malinois named Sinbad. A former NYPD police dog, Sinbad is vicious when need be and reliable to a fault–unless a train goes by or there’s a thunderstorm, then chances are he will turn tail and run.
Brian’s first clients are Jeff and Melody Patten. He’s an explosives expert for a local demolitions company, she’s a stay-at-home Mom. Both are devoted parents to their young daughter, Angela. The problem comes in the form of one Collin Lanaski, an unstable ex-Air Force lieutenant and Angela’s second grade teacher, who suddenly starts insisting that Angela is his daughter—the same daughter who died in a tragic car accident four years earlier.  What does Collin base this incredible revelation on?  Dog tags and car seats.  Brian is convinced the man has suffered a psychotic break.  He’s delusional and dangerous, and it becomes the P.I.’s job to protect Angela from a madman.

ABOUT JEAN HACKENSMITH

I have been writing since the age of twenty.  (That’s 37 years and, yes, I’m disclosing my age.)  I am the proud mother of three, stepmother of two, and grandmother to twelve wonderful children.  I lost the love of my life, my husband Ron, in November of 2011 when he died in an accident at work.  He took my heart with him and, for a time, my desire to write.  Time, as they say, heals all wounds, and I have again discovered my passion for the written word.  In fact, I find it strangely comforting to delve into the intricate webs that are my character’s lives and immerse myself in their existence instead of dwelling on my own.

Next to writing, my second passion is live theater.  I founded a local community theater group back in 1992 and directed upwards of 40 shows, including three that I authored.  I also appeared on stage a few times, portraying Anna in The King and I and Miss Hannigan in Annie.  I am sad to say that the theater group closed its final curtain in 2008, but those 16 years will always hold some of my fondest memories.

My husband and I moved from Superior five years ago, seeking the serenity of country living.  We also wanted to get away from the natural air conditioning provided by Lake Superior.  We moved only 50 miles south, but the temperature can vary by 20-30 degrees.  I guess I’m a country girl at heart.  I simply love this area, even though I must now enjoy its beauty alone.  I love the solitude, the picturesque beauty of the sun rising over the water, the strangely calming effect of watching a deer graze outside your kitchen window.  Never again, will I live in the city.  I am an author, after all, and what better place to be inspired than in God’s own back yard.

Abducted at eighteen. Held captive for 15 months.   It reads like one of those headlines. And yes, I did it. I stole her. Nora, with her long dark hair and silky skin. She’s my weakness, my obsession. I’m not a good man. I never pretended to be one. She can love me, but she can’t change me. I can, however, change her. My name is Julian Esguerra, and Nora is mine to keep.   ***Keep Me is the sequel to Twist Me, told from Nora & Julian’s POV.***

Excerpt

Julian's POV

“Are you all right?” There is a concerned expression on Nora’s face as she reaches up to touch the area above my left ear. Her slender fingers are gentle on my scalp. “Does it still hurt?” Her touch sends pleasure streaking down my spine. I want this from her. I want her to care about my well-being. I want her to love me even though I stole her freedom—even though, by all rights, she should hate me. I have no illusions about myself. I’m one of those men they show on the news—the ones that everyone fears and despises. I took a young woman because I wanted her and for no other reason. I took her and I made her mine. I make no excuses for my actions. I feel no guilt either. I wanted Nora, and now she’s here with me, looking at me like I’m the most important person in her world. And I am. I am exactly what she needs now . . . what she craves. I will give her everything, and I will take everything from her in return. Her body, her mind, her devotion—I want it all. I want her pain and her pleasure, her fear and her joy. I want to be her entire life. “No, it’s fine,” I say in response to her earlier question. “It’s almost healed.” She pulls her fingers away, and I catch her hand, not ready to forego the pleasure of her touch. Her hand is slim and delicate in my grasp, her skin soft and warm. She tries to tug it away reflexively, but I don’t let her, my fingers tightening around her small palm. Her strength is insignificant compared to mine; she can’t make me release her unless I chose to let her go. She doesn’t really want me to let her go, anyway. I can feel the excitement rising within her, and my body hardens, a dark hunger awakening within me again. Reaching across the table, I slowly and purposefully unbuckle her safety belt. Then I stand up, still holding her hand, and lead her to the bedroom at the back of the airplane.

R.I.P

Maya Angelou, one of the great voices in American writing, passed away on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86. A Renaissance woman, Ms. Angelou was a dancer, poet, memoirist, actor, and director. She worked with Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, and James Baldwin. She served on presidential commissions for both Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. President Bill Clinton invited her to deliver a poem (“On the Pulse of Morning”) at his first inaugural. And in 2010 she received the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama.

Born in Missouri on April 4, 1928, Ms. Angelou’s early life was marked by trauma that she detailed in her National Book Award-nominated memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She was raped by her mother’s boyfriend when she was only seven years old. Emotionally and physically scarred, she felt guilt when her uncles murdered her abuser, believing she was responsible for his death. She would not utter a word for more than five years.

After choosing to speak again (precipitated by a relationship with a mentor named Mrs. Flowers), Ms. Angelou began to flourish academically and artistically. Attending high school in San Francisco she began taking classes in dance and drama. (She also worked, for a time, as the first black woman to drive a cable car.) By the early 1950’s, with two young sons, she moved to New York where she first broke into entertainment, beginning as a nightclub singer. She also continued her studies in dance working with legendary choreographers Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham. She also earned a role in the national touring company of Porgy and Bess (1957-1958)

New York also had an impact on her literary career. It was there that she met James Baldwin and joined the Harlem Writers Guild. It was also around the same time she first heard a young preacher from Alabama, Martin Luther King, Jr., speak on civil rights.

In 1962 she left the U.S. to live in Egypt and serve as the editor for a weekly English language paper. Two years later she moved to Ghana where she met with Malcolm X while he was touring the country. Following the meeting Ms. Angelou returned to the U.S. to work with Mr. X on the creation of the Organization of African American Unity. (Unfortunately the organization was never fully realized after Mr. X’s assassination in February 1965.)

She decided to re-direct her efforts by working with Dr. King and was named Northern Coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). This relationship also ended in tragedy when Dr. King was assassinated on Ms. Angelou’s birthday in 1968.

Just a year later Ms. Angelou gained national acclaim and a National Book Award nomination after the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - the first of six memoirs. Encouraged in her work by Mr. Baldwin, Caged Bird, is still popular on high school reading lists 45 years after publication.

Ms. Angelou was now in high demand and her output continued to receive the highest accolades. Her first book of published poetry, Just Give Me a Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie (1972) earned her a Pulitzer Prize nomination. That same year her screenplay for the film Georgia, Georgia became the first by a black woman to be produced. In 1973, she earned a Tony nomination for her performance in the Broadway production Look Away. She also a supporting role in the 1977 miniseries Roots.

During all this she continued to publish her life story, publishing five books following Caged Bird: Gather Together in My Name (1974), Swingin’, Singin’, and Gettin’ Merry Like Christmas (1976), The Heart of a Woman (1981), All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes (1986), and A Song Flung Up to Heaven (2002). (The last earned Ms. Angelou her third Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album, she earned two others in 1993 and 1995.)

The body of Ms. Angelou’s written was so vast, including additional poetry and children’s books, that in 2013 the National Book Foundation awarded her the Literarian Award for her contributions to literature.

Excerpt

Today, I feel like a king with a convincing win under my belt, and the beauty on my arm is the envy of most of the guys here. Life can’t get any better.

I introduce Eevie around. She shakes hands like she means it, holds her own in conversation, and gets the occasional laugh out of guys I didn’t think had a sense of humour. She must’ve been taking note of some of the ins and outs of motocross, having the balls to ask some interesting questions.

Take note, people: funny, intelligent woman with the guts and looks to match. That confidence is heartbreak material. They’re practically drooling over her. It’s almost pathetic. If they thought they had half a chance, they’d be down on their knees in a millisecond begging for a shot.

Boys, it ain’t gonna happen. Every delectable inch of her is mine, including her heart.

Talking with some of the support crew, Jones edges his way into the conversation, standing a little close to Eevie for my liking. He puffs out his chest, and hooks his thumbs through the front loops of his jeans. Blonde hair and a baby face, he’s a pretty boy. A mummy’s boy. From the way he carries on, he probably got everything he ever wanted as a kid, and had all the latest gear. Mum could barely afford to buy my jerseys, and when she did, I wore them until I outgrew them. I had no choice but to make them last. Last round Jones threw a tantrum like a three year old over something stupid. He got what he wanted, though. Disgusting. Not that I give a shit where he’s come from; at least I know I don’t carry on like a fucking twit.

My eyes are on Jones, and he knows it. Damn it, if he doesn’t like pushing my buttons, and having Eevie here he’s gonna do anything he can to push. If he weren’t on my team I’d barely give him the time of day. He’d be half an alright bloke if he wasn’t so self-absorbed.

He acts like he’s engrossed in what Eevie’s talking about, but his eyes travel down her chest, and even lower, as if he’s trying to rip her clothes off purely with the power of his mind. It heats my blood more than it should.

“When you’re ready for a real man, Eevie, come knockin’ on my door,” Jones says. His eyes dart in my direction before resting back on Eevie’s tits. Fucking douchebag.

Eevie frowns, and purses her glossy lips. “Sorry, I don’t understand. If I’m ready for a real man, why would I knock on your door? Wouldn’t I just go home?” She bats those long lashes. That’s my girl.

Everybody erupts into a fit of laughter, me louder than most. Jones shakes his head, and playfully punches me in the arm. “You’re killin’ me, Aidan. You win today, and I hate you for it, and now your woman’s gonna break my heart,” he says, faking a southern American accent. He clutches his chest as if wounded, and winks at Eevie.

I take a long swig of my beer. “Life’s a bitch, Jones.” Now fuck off.

It was just two simple words. Julian had heard them before from lots of different women. But there was something different about this time. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. This wasn’t the first time he’d bought a beautiful women a beautiful dress. Of course, every woman was excited when he took them shopping. Their faces usually lit up when they saw the price tag, and they could barely contain their excitement when Julian took out his credit card. Eva hadn’t even checked how much the dress was. Julian knew it wasn’t the price that mattered, just the gift itself. It was refreshing and it made him more curious than ever about this amazing woman.                         ‘Do you like it?’ Eva said, stepping out from behind a curtain. She caught the side of the flowing skirt and swished it from side to side as she spun around. Julian could see a sparkle in her eyes that wasn’t there before. He would buy her every dress in the shop if it would keep that sparkle there. ‘Beautiful,’ he said. ‘But your body is way too delicious to hide.’ Eva look worried. ‘Here, try this one.’ Julian had spotted a little violet number early that afternoon. Eva in that dress was the first thought that came into his head. Or, ripping that dress off Eva, to be truthful. Either way he wanted to buy it for her. ‘It’s a little more…’ ‘…revealing,’ Eva interrupted, taking the dress from him. ‘I was going to say flattering. Just try it on, please?’ Eva nodded and skipped back to the changing room.                         This time she emerged silent and obviously nervous. Julian exhaled sharply. His cock bulged in his trousers. ‘Fuck. You look amazing.’ Eva lowered her head and fixed a strand of stray hair back behind her ear with shaking fingers. Julian knew she had no idea how stunning she was. He was going to change that. ‘I can’t reach…’ Eva spun around to show Julian the open zip that exposed her whole spine. Julian sighed hard. It took all his self-control not to rip the dress from her body and fuck her there on the shop floor. ‘Come here, beautiful.’

Excerpt #1 - Erin

As my Maestro steps toward me standing in the midst of his symphony, I find myself totally agreeing with Luca’s observation more. Alek strolls to my side, his black hair slicked back and his strange, hypnotic, brown-blue eyes directed straight into my dark brown ones.

He takes my right hand as he faces his symphony and I face the crowd, the front of our bodies turned in opposite directions but our faces less than a few inches apart, and then kisses my knuckles just before he leans over and brushes his lips across mine. It’s the slightest touch, yet there’s enough feeling inside it to waken every cell inside my body, making me fearless. The applause and shouting almost deafens me.

“You are a stunning little Jaybird,” he whispers in my ear where only the two of us can hear.

At once, the audience and the symphony behind me, along with the dancers hiding in the shadows over the lower stage, all disappear. My heart speeds up; not because I’m nervous, but because that’s how much love I feel inside my soul for this man—my heart, my lifeline. He is the anchor who weighs me down—not at the bottom of a sea, but the one who keeps me from floating away to be forever lost in a world of the mind that oftentimes snatches me away inside its clutches of sadness and heartache.

He moves back and brushes his lips across mine, the simple touch jolting awake every single nerve in my body; the same way he has done since the first time we made love seven months ago. Alek worked for my kiss, something I no longer wanted to do; and to this day, I can’t believe I made him wait so long before giving in to something so heavenly and divine. What would life have been like for me without experiencing something like this every day?

Boring. Well, yeah, that’s a given.

Numb. So many women fall into that trap.

Celibate. Uh... Don’t think so.

The crowd roars and it’s hard to believe this is supposed to be a cultured group. There’s something mystical about a man who can command the notes inside of a song this way, a magician of melody and harmonies and voices. Nikolai’s dancers dance along to the tune, caught up in a web of musical sex and wrapping the audience up in the clutches of the god all this centers around.

I love everything about him: his head of deliciously dark hair that won’t stay in place when he awakens each morning, his broad shoulders, his tapered waist, his smile and dangerously sexy brown eyes that have just the slightest bit of blue inside the irises. It’s official. I’m completely hooked, a woman who has promised herself she’d never allow herself to feel the sweet temptation of another man’s lips on hers let alone fall in love with him. Standing here with the Maestro, I cannot describe the way my heart flutters each time I glance at his handsome face and strong hands!

Oh, God, those holy hands of creation.

Could anything in this world be any more perfect than the way Alek Dostov can blast through choreographing a song, and then later on use those same hands to drive my body wild with desire, temptations and experiences of the mind I’ve never even dreamed possible?

Excerpt#2 - Alek

I stalk toward her, bend down and pull her body toward the edge of the bed so that I’m situated between her legs. Long, dark hair trails along the bed behind her, and together with her little black tank top dress, I can’t stop the hard on raging through me. Vanilla drifts into my nostrils, a scent she prefers and sometimes chooses to couple with an apple-scented perfume—a combination that drives me wild with lust and need for her; things that are hard to describe. Even though tension surrounds our marital plans, there’s not a damn thing strained about our sex life.

“This hotel makes the 300-year-old mansions back home in Louisiana look young and fresh,” Erin says, glancing around the room. She’s right. Venice reeks of history and ancient battles—things that my sister Adriana adores—but that is something that has always made life a little more challenging for me back in school; history. Nevertheless, I can still appreciate the Floating City’s eclectic beauty.

“The designer in me is going wild right now,” she continues, a dreamy expression on her face.

“So is the man who loves her,” I say, my gaze locked on Eric’s face. In return, I get a beaming smile, and then she bites down on the corner of her lower lip, her look mischievously wicked.

“I know that look, my horny Maestro.”

“Is that right? What is this look?” I ask while grinding my sex against the inside of her right thigh. Her pink lips part and just that tiny response from her sends me spiraling over the edge. I don’t think I can wait until we get back from our meeting with the Fenice’s owners tonight. I need Erin as much as I need a good bowl of Pelmeni, a popular pastry back home in Mother Russia that’s filled with meat.

“That is you misbehaving as usual,” she says, grinning.

I grasp her arms and pull her up against my chest. “Is that right? What do you intend to about my, er, behavior problem?”

“Hmm. Let me see. I’ll have to think of a really good punishment.” Lowering her mouth to my neck, she starts nibbling and kissing the exposed area on my chest, working her way up to the skin underneath my chin, teasing my lips with warm breath from in between hers. Then, finally, her lips land on that spot on the side of my neck, the skin over my jugular. The combined sensation of her hot breath and the way she sucks my skin shoots straight through my body.

“This is how we wind up not leaving the room,” I whisper against her ear, inhaling the scent of freshly washed hair.

“If we miss our appointment with Frederico,” she begins, easing her assault on my neck, moving back so she’s now perched on her knees at the edge of the bed and focusing on unfastening the belt on my trousers, “then more punishment will be necessary.”

“Don’t tempt me, Signorina Angelo,” I warn, slinking a hand through her dark hair and pulling it the slightest bit so she’s glancing up at me, her dark eyes contrasting with the pink of her lips. Images of that perfect mouth wrapped around my sex while those deliciously dark eyes glance into mine, reflecting all the love and loyalty I know she holds in her heart just for me, drive me wild with desire. “You might find I rather enjoy your punishment.”

“Noted, Sir Bad Boy Maestro.” She smiles, dips her head and takes all of me into her mouth, ripping all thoughts of negativity from within my head. Instead, I choose to lose myself—that deepest part of my soul I’ve never allowed anyone to own—inside the warm embrace of the woman I love.

MeetTheAuthor

Author of the Lost Immortals Saga and the Seraphine Trilogy, I'm also a mother, blogger, reader, gardener, home renovator, and a slayer of Egyptian mummies in Tomb Raider. I believe in karma, coffee, and seriously wish that the producers of Xena would bring my favorite show ever back.

I was born in the race-car city of Charlotte, NC, and now live in the City of Alchemy and Medicine, NC, when I'm not hanging out in Bardonia (Lost Immortals). Most of my characters are based on people that I've met throughout my travels and adventures. People tend to stop and start conversations with me as if I've known them my entire life. Does this freak me out? Not really. My mom says that one day I'll get kidnapped by one of them. I told her that if it weren't for these lovely people then I wouldn't be able to create the stories that I do.

I have many favorite authors but there are some who truly rock my socks: Octavia Butler, Anne Rice, Kami Garcia, J.K. Rowling, Dean Koontz (on his good-book days), Stephen King (same as DK) Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Kostova, and so many more...

Some other common tidbits...hmm. I've watched the movie Under the Tuscan Sun almost 200 times. Seriously, the way I see it is if I keep watching it enough, then suddenly the house that Diane Lane lives in will magically appear in my backyard. I know. I have a huge imagination!
